Athenian politician. Although of noble
family, he assumed the leadership of the
peasant party, and seized power 561 BC. He
was twice expelled, but recovered power from
541 BC until his death. Ruling as a dictator
under constitutional forms, he was the first
to have the Homeric poems written down, and
founded Greek drama by introducing the
Dionysiac peasant festivals into Athens.
